Come join our Family!
Gypsum Creek Outfitters was established in 1992 by Mr. Jon Jodrie. He was born and raised in the area and was a 3rd generation outfitter. Jon has a few bucks and bears in the record books and is a legend in the local communities.
Falling into this business at a Sunday dinner with friends was not something that was ever planned or even thought about for us. Ginny told me to get on the buggy because Mr. Jodrie’s ranch was for sale and it came with a 30 year old outfitting business. When we turned the final corner to the ranch we instantly fell in love and our lives changed forever.
When I moved to Colorado at 25, I would have bet anyone $1,000 that I was going to kill a bull with my bow that year. It was a very humbling experience that changed my life forever! Elk hunting was the hardest thing I have ever done! I decided I was going to quit my job and take September off so my coworkers introduced me to Drew Rouse, owner and creator of Reel Game Calls. He took me hunting with him the next day and called in a rag horn the first time ever meeting the guy. I had never really called to animals before this day and it was unbelievable. I started building elk calls for Drew at night time so I would have some extra money to be able to quit my job and have all September off. I shot a cow my second archery season but it was by luck only I believe. It took 5 seasons and around 500 miles on my feet to get my first bull elk down. I learned from hard work, determination and FAILURE. Lots and lots of FAILURE. My first archery bull was actually my first day guiding and owner of this business. My wife believed in my passion and put it all on the line for us to buy this ranch and business.
Turning a passion into a career was quite the learning curve. I learned real fast that not all OUTIFTTERS are created equal and not all HUNTERS are created equal as well. We limit all our hunters in every season to offer the best experience possible and have the most opportunity as well. We only have a certain amount of days a year to be able to be in the mountains trying to fill tags and build a good name in the business. Building relationships with our clients before the hunts really helps us be prepared and ready to go when the hunt begins. We spend all summer preparing for our fall hunting seasons so coming prepared is a must to be able to be successful. No matter what obstacles we may face on the hunt, we have the experience and knowledge to not let anything hold us back.
I was taught hard work always pays off! Well that is just the beginning in the world of mountain hunting. The GCO family of guides are all guys I have personally hand selected, hunted side by side with and trust my life, name and reputation with. These guys all have their own place here and all matter equally. There is no right or wrong when it comes to hunting and no two situations will ever be the same. We are students of the game and will always continue to learn and grow together. We put our heads together at the end of every day, every hunt and every season to be able to offer the best advice, experience and hunt possible. We do get a lot of returning clients but I do not try to book out a bunch in advance because we want to look at our schedule at the end of the season and see what we did right, what we did wrong and where there is room to improve.
Here at Gypsum Creek, we build lifelong relationships and most of our clients become more like family! Located in the heart of the mountains, we limit our hunters in every season to offer the best experience possible and have the most opportunity as well. Partnering with Bergara Rifles, Precision Hunting Supply and Huskamaw Optics has taken our experience to another level. Having the experience, knowledge and confidence in the mountains makes all the difference. We have a passion for this lifestyle and are truly blessed to call this our home! No matter what season you come, you will be counting the days to return.
